John Karounos - Retirement from Coaching Senior Football

Dear Life Members, Members, Supporters and the Greater Football community,

JK

We would like to announce the retirement of our highly esteemed coach John Karounos.

John's coaching career started while playing for West Adelaide seniors in South Australia coaching U/14 and U/16's. Coaching juniors he was appointed State Coach for Australian Junior championships in Queensland where they finished second to NSW level on points but one goal difference.

John went on to coach  in South Australia from Amateur, 3rd, 2nd, 1st divisions and premier league, National Youth League and assistant coach for West Adelaide in the old National Soccer League.

An injury to a shoulder stopped John playing but he continued coaching and in between started to referee with highlight of flying to Darwin to referee Chelsea v Northern Territory in 1974 and Cup Final in Nhulunbuy (Gove).

John was offered a management position and came to Geelong in 1993 having left Adelaide as General Manager of West Adelaide Soccer Club in the NSL.

He coached mainly GRFA rep squads and including senior rep squad in the Addie Cup and Geelong's senior women's premier league team.

John was elected Chairman of Victorian Junior Soccer and together with interested parents and the President of GRFA started the Lara Soccer Club by asking the Lara Sports club to play under their banner. He then helped coach the U/9 and U/11 juniors to kick off at Lara.

After 24 years of not coaching seniors, John took over coaching seniors at Bell Park with the highlight of winning Addie Cup beating Corio in the final.

John was then asked by Football Victoria to create the NPL together with a group of 5 including former Socceroo Captain Alan Davidson.

John holds a C licence that was gained at the Australian Institute of Sport whilst coaching West Adelaide National Youth League.  John has a FIFA Coaching Certificate to coach Referees.

John was the President of GRFA and is also a Life Member of Football Victoria.

John joined Lara United in 2019 and has now decided to hang up the senior coaching boots.

Lara United is very grateful to John and what he has done with our State League 5 Men, but also the club as a whole.  John will continue assisting Lara United FC into the future with various roles around the club.

We want to thank John and Sophia for their contribution to Australian Soccer.
